Messaging rates
Certain control channels route messages through a cellular gateway, which carries a small per-message cost. You load credits in advance and are only charged when a message is sent or received. There are no monthly minimums.

Load credits in advance
Top up your messaging credit balance from the dashboard at iot.smartremote.co.za. Credits are deducted automatically each time a message is sent or received on a paid channel.
Low balance alerts
SmartRemote will notify you when your credit balance runs low so you can top up before messaging stops working. You decide the threshold.
Credits never expire
Unused credits carry forward indefinitely. There are no monthly minimums and no expiry dates — load what you need, when you need it.
Pricing questions
How much does it cost to run SmartRemote per month?
That depends entirely on how often you trigger it. Most households send fewer than 100 messages a month across all channels — that's R15 or less in messaging costs. If you use Telegram, the app, or the web dashboard, those are always free regardless of usage.
Do I need to load credits before I can use it?
Only for WhatsApp, SMS, and missed call control. Telegram, the mobile app, and the web dashboard work without any credit balance.
What happens if my credit balance runs out?
Messaging on paid channels will stop until you top up. Your device, schedules, and settings are unaffected — and Telegram, app, and web control continue to work normally.
Are there any subscription fees?
No. The device is a once-off purchase and the cloud platform is included at no extra cost. The only ongoing cost is messaging credits if you use WhatsApp, SMS, or missed call control.
Can I switch to Telegram to avoid messaging costs?
Yes. Telegram control is functionally equivalent to WhatsApp and is completely free. If cost is a concern, Telegram is a straightforward alternative.
